How to use it
-
Enter your network
Type the WiFi name exactly as it appears on your devices, then the password and the security type.
-
Test it
Scan the preview with a phone that is not already on the network and check that it joins.
-
Print a sign
Download the SVG for print or the PNG for screens, and place it where guests can see it.
Free means free here
Many free QR code generators are free only until you download, or they quietly make a short link that stops working when a trial ends. This one makes a static code: the content is inside the code itself, so it works forever with no account, no watermark, no ads when people scan it and no expiry.
You still get the design tools people usually pay for: colors and gradients, rounded or dotted modules, round corners, your own logo in the middle, a frame with a label such as Scan me, and downloads as PNG up to 2048 px, SVG, EPS for print shops and a print ready PDF. A built in scan check reads the finished code back, so you know it works before you print it.
How WiFi QR codes work
A WiFi QR code holds your network name, password and security type in a standard text format that phones understand. The iPhone camera has joined networks from these codes since iOS 11, and most Android phones from Android 10 on can scan them from the camera or from the WiFi settings screen. Nobody has to read out or type a long password.
This is the exact text inside the code for a network called Acme Guest:
WIFI:T:WPA;S:Acme Guest;P:latte\;art\:2026;;
The password here is latte;art:2026. Semicolons, colons, commas, quotes and backslashes have to be escaped with a backslash or phones read the wrong password, and the generator does that for you.
Which security setting to choose
Check the security type in your router app or on the router label, then pick:
| Your router says | Choose | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| WPA2 Personal, WPA3 Personal, WPA or WPA2 mixed | WPA, WPA2 or WPA3 | The usual home and business setting. Passwords are 8 to 63 characters |
| WEP | WEP | Only on very old routers. Consider upgrading, WEP is easy to break |
| Open, no password | No password | Guests join without a password |
| WPA2 Enterprise or 802.1X, with a username | Not supported | These networks need a username and certificate, which a WiFi QR code cannot carry |
Print a WiFi sign or a table tent
Tap Print a WiFi sign for a ready to print page with a large code, the network name and, if you choose, the password for laptops that cannot scan. Choose Table tent to print two copies on one page that fold in half and stand on a table or a counter.
| Sign | Where it goes | Code width | Scans from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Table tent, folded letter or A4 | Cafe table, hotel desk, meeting room | About 6 cm (2.3 in) | Up to about 60 cm |
| Wall or counter sign, letter or A4 | Reception, waiting room, checkout | About 9.5 cm (3.7 in) | Up to about 1 m |
| Poster, A3 or larger | Entrance, event hall | 20 cm (8 in) or more | 2 m and farther |
Where a WiFi QR code helps
- Vacation rentals. Put a table tent next to the welcome book so guests are online before they unpack.
- Cafes and restaurants. A code on each table saves staff from spelling out the password all day.
- Offices and coworking. A sign at reception for visitors, pointed at a separate guest network.
- Clinics and salons. A waiting room sign keeps people busy without asking at the desk.
- Events and workshops. A slide or poster with the venue network, so a whole room joins in a minute.
Keep your network safe
Anyone who can see the code can join the network, so use it for a guest network rather than the network your business systems run on. If you change the password, print a new code.
Your network name and password are turned into the code on this device. They are not sent to Zapped or to any other server while you type, preview, download or print. The network name and password are case sensitive, so copy them exactly, and tick the hidden network box if your network does not broadcast its name.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work for a hidden network?
Yes. Tick This is a hidden network and the code tells phones to look for it, even though it does not broadcast its name.
Can guests with older phones use it?
iPhones since iOS 11 join from the camera, and most Android phones from Android 10 on scan WiFi codes from the camera or the WiFi settings. For other devices, print the network name and password on the sign as well.
Can I use one code for several networks?
No. A WiFi QR code holds one network. Make a code for each network, for example one for guests and one for staff devices.
Can I print a WiFi sign for my business?
Yes. Use Print a WiFi sign for a full page sign, or pick Table tent for a folded card that stands on a table. Both include the network name, and the password if you want it shown.
Can I add my logo and change the design?
Yes, for free. Pick a theme or set your own colors, dot style, corner style, logo and frame label. The scan check under the preview tells you if a design gets too hard to read.
Which file should I send to a print shop?
Send the SVG or the EPS. Both are vector files that stay sharp at any size. The EPS keeps colors and shapes but leaves out a logo or gradient, so use the SVG for those designs.
Is my WiFi password safe here?
Yes. The QR code is made in your browser. The password is never sent to Zapped, never saved and never included in analytics.
Which security type should I choose?
Most networks use WPA, WPA2 or WPA3, which all use the WPA option. Choose WEP only for very old routers, and no password for open networks.
Do guests need an app?
No. The camera app on current iPhones and Android phones reads WiFi QR codes and offers to join.
What happens if I change the password?
The old code stops working. Make a new code with the new password and replace your signs.
